What we do for newsrooms

  • Breaking News Crews

    Breaking News Crews

Camera operators and producers go to the scene of a developing story and shoot broadcast-ready footage. Crews are briefed on your angle before they leave and file material as they go.

How we work

Built around newsroom deadlines and routines

A news shoot succeeds or fails on preparation as much as on the day itself. headluma plans crews, routes and delivery times before anyone leaves Swansea. We work to your deadlines and fit in with your editors and producers rather than asking you to change.

Contact
  1. Crews planned around the story

Rhys Pritchard plans every crew, route and delivery deadline. That means the right operator and kit are sent, travel time is allowed for, and you know when material will reach you before the shoot starts.

  2. Pictures shot for broadcast

Our operators are trained in handheld news technique, so shots are steady, framed with edit in mind and usable straight away. Careful exposure and sound capture reduce the clean-up needed afterwards.

  3. Clear sound on location

Audio is treated as seriously as pictures. Our engineers choose microphones for the setting, monitor levels throughout and check every live feed, so speech stays clear in wind, traffic and crowds.

  4. Editing against the clock

Daniel Okafor and the editing team cut packages to your running order and house style. Files are checked, named consistently and delivered in your format, so nothing needs reworking on your side.

  5. Hand-over that fits your system

We agree file naming, formats and delivery routes with your team in advance. Footage arrives where your ingest expects it, labelled in a way your producers recognise at a glance.

The flow of news

From first call to finished report

Every job follows the same plain sequence, whether it is a single clip or a day of coverage. Knowing what happens at each stage lets your editor plan around us and keeps surprises to a minimum.

Brief and dispatch

You contact us with the story, location and deadline. We confirm what we can cover, assign a crew and agree how and when material will reach you. Rhys plans the route and timings, and the crew leaves with a clear idea of the angle you need. Where a story is still developing, we keep the line open so the plan can change as facts emerge.

Shoot and send

On location the operator gathers pictures and interviews while the sound engineer monitors audio. Where speed matters, footage is sent back as it is captured so your team can start work early. For live coverage, our unit sets up, tests the link with your gallery and stays on the feed until you release it.

Edit and deliver

Material is logged, cut and finished to your house style, then checked for picture and sound before delivery. Files go out in the format you specify with names that match your system. If changes are needed after your review, the same editor makes them, so the revision is quick and consistent.

Background

Fourteen years of news shoots from Swansea

headluma was founded in 2012 and has worked with television newsrooms and broadcasters since. Rhys Pritchard has run news shoots from the start, and the same core team of operator, editor and engineer now covers most of our work. We are a small company, and that is deliberate: the people you brief are the people on the job.

What guides us

Principles we apply on every shoot

News video is judged quickly and used publicly, so small errors travel far. Our principles are practical habits rather than slogans. They shape how crews are briefed, how footage is checked and how we speak to your newsroom when a story is moving fast.

  1. Accuracy

Accuracy means we check before we send. Crews note names, places and times as they shoot, and editors confirm captions and cuts against that information. If something is uncertain, we tell you plainly so your team can decide how to use it rather than discovering a problem on air.

  2. Speed

Speed comes from preparation, not shortcuts. Routes, kit and delivery methods are planned in advance, so on the day the crew can move straight to the story. We send material as soon as it is usable and tell you honestly how long each stage will take.

  3. Clarity

Clarity applies to pictures, sound and communication alike. We frame shots so the point of the story is visible, capture speech cleanly and keep our messages short and specific. You always know where the crew is, what has been shot and when it will arrive.

Frequently asked questions

Answers to the questions newsroom teams ask most often before working with us. If yours is not covered here, the contact page is the quickest way to reach us.

How do we request a crew?

Send an enquiry through the contact page or phone us on 01792 410286 with the story, location and deadline. We confirm whether we can cover it and who will go. For ongoing work, a written quotation or confirmation sets out what is included before the job starts.

What formats do you deliver in?

We deliver in the format your newsroom needs, agreed before the job. That covers file type, frame rate, naming and the route the files take to you. If you have a house specification for ingest, send it and we will work to it.

Can you provide a live feed from the scene?

Yes. Our portable live units send pictures and sound from the location to your gallery, and a sound and live engineer stays with the equipment. We test the link with your team before going live and keep it running until you release us.

Do you edit footage that someone else shot?

Yes. Our editors cut reports, bulletins and clips from material shot by us or supplied by you, finishing to your house style. Tell us the running time, format and deadline when you enquire, and we will confirm what is realistic.

Where do your studio interviews take place?

Interviews can be recorded in our studio in Swansea or at your premises. Either way a director and sound engineer attend, and lighting is set to suit the guest and your programme. We agree the setting and timings with you beforehand.

What does newsroom workflow support involve?

We advise on how footage is ingested, named and handed over, then help set it up so material moves smoothly between crews, editors and producers. The work is practical and built around your existing systems rather than replacing them.

How are services priced and paid for?

Prices are listed on the Prices page. After an enquiry we send a written quotation or confirmation, and once the work is done we issue an invoice payable by bank transfer. Cancellations and refunds follow our payment and refund policy.

Do you cover stories outside Swansea?

Our crews travel to stories across the region and beyond, depending on the brief and timing. Tell us the location and deadline and we will say plainly whether we can reach it in time and what travel affects in the quotation.
